Congratulations! You have successfully installed and connected the Iomega BUZ
Multi-Media device for use with the Ariel Performance Analysis System (APAS) and are ready
to use either the ARIEL REALCAP or CAPTURE programs.
You are experiencing a video codec problem on your computer. A codec is
small software or hardware that decompress the video to a format that the program can
understand. This codec is not installed on the computer.
I guess that you dont intent to buy another Iomega Buz capture board wich
could solve the problem also, so the solution will be to install a software codec. We
currently use the Morgan MJPG codec wich is working OK with the APAS system. Visit the
Morgan web site and download the codec. Follow the instructions how to install it.
Here is the link to the Morgan-Multimedia Web site:
After the installation and a reboot the APAS should be working. If you
encounter more problems just let me know.
Jan Brond
Bob-
I have a couple of suggestions for you to try with Stream Capture on your
new system.
1) Try defragmenting the drive that contains the temporary capture file.
2) specify a different drive for your temporary capture file. Also
defragment that drive if you are having problems
3) Try to find some setting that works. For example try reducing the image
size from 720x480 to the next smaller size. Try changing the "Quality" to a
smaller number. Reduce the time of collection. When you find something that
works, work your way up to find settings which break the process and result
in dropped frames.
I have a 166 vanilla Pentium & I can capture full screen ok. Yesterday I
was having a problem which I solved by moving the temporary capture file to
a different drive. The original was almost full which I believe was causing
my problem.
Good luck, Jeremy
MJPEG IMAGE ORDER
A standard video picture is made up of odd and even lines across the screen. Television
standards require these lines to be interlaced. This means only half of the lines are
displayed in one field. The first (odd) set of lines is displayed in the first field while
the second (even) set of lines is displayed in the second field. These two fields comprise
a frame, which is a complete picture.
When capturing a video sequence utilizing the full speed provided with today's video
standards, it is normally required to use special VCR equipment with field-by-field
stepping capabilities. Industry standard hardware and APAS software modules make it
possible to capture video sequences from a VCR or camcorder directly to the computer hard
drive without special requirement of expensive VCR equipment. Any VCR can be used as a
video source with the APAS.
The APAS system uses hardware and software that has Motion JPEG image hardware
compression that also complies with the major hardware vendors. After capturing the video
to the hard drive, the APAS system allows separation of each frame to its two component
fields.
Depending on the hardware and software combinations used for recording and displaying
the AVI files, it is possible for the order of the displayed fields to be reversed. It is
also possible for the same AVI file to play in normal order on one computer and in reverse
order on another computer! For this reason, the Ariel CAPTURE, TRIM and DIGITIZE programs
provides the option to specify the order for displaying the images of the AVI files.
If it appears that the images are "jerky" or are being displayed in a
"zigzag" manner, the field order probably needs to be reversed. The field order
is specified using the following steps.
CAPTURE PROGRAM
- Select CAPTURE and CAPTURE PARAMETERS. The Algorithm Defaults menu will be
displayed. Click on the STREAM tab to display the Streaming Capture options menu.
Select either Normal or Reverse order in the MJPEG section. The current selection is
indicated by the black dot to the left of the option. NOTE: When this option is changed,
it affects all other APAS software modules where the AVI file can be displayed (Capture,
Trim, Digitize, Display, Vectors etc.)
- Select OK to proceed or CANCEL to abort.
TRIM PROGRAM
- Select OPTIONS and MJPEG. The MJPEG Options menu will be displayed.
Left-click either Normal or Reverse order. The current selection is indicated by the black
dot to the left of the option. NOTE: When this option is changed, it affects all other
APAS software modules where the AVI file can be displayed (Capture, Digitize, Display,
Vectors etc.)
- Select OK to proceed or CANCEL to abort.
DIGITIZE PROGRAM
- Select FILE, SEQUENCE and NEW (or OLD) and specify the
Sequence Name.
- Select FILE, NEW (or OLD) VIEW and specify the View File and
the corresponding AVI file.
- Select IMAGES and VIDEO to display the Video Options menu. Left-click
either Normal or Reverse order. The current selection is indicated by the black dot to the
left of the option. NOTE: When this option is changed, it affects all other APAS software
modules where the AVI file can be displayed (Capture, Trim, Digitize, Display, Vectors
etc.)
- Select OK to proceed or CANCEL to abort.
WINDOWS WIN.INI FILE
The Image Order information is stored in the WIN.INI file. Once this parameter is set
in the Capture, Trim, or Digitize module, the Ariel software will remember the current
setting. The following information is listed in the WIN.INI file of the APAS computer.
[APAS System Information]
ReverseFields=0
NtscPal=0
When Reverse Fields is set to 0, the APAS software reads the video fields in normal
order. When the Reverse Fields is set to 1, the video fields are displayed in reverse
order.
Dear Antonio,
I received you note about your difficulty about using the Panasonic
7350 VCR with your new Ariel APAS system. Does your new system have
the Iomega buz director capture card? I have just installed a card in
my desktop system, in addition to having the traditional APAS system
with the Panasonic 7350 VCR with the shuttle remote and the the p34
or RS232 serial computer control for the VCR used to step the VCR
frame by frame through the videotape. If you new system has the buz
capture card then what you are going to do is use the streaming of
the video and capture the segment that you desire. From your
description this is what is perplexing as you have to view the image
in the little viewer box on the computer which has a delay and then
you have to use the trimmer function to edit the exact segment that
you want to digitize. I am doing it similarly at my home with my HI8
camcorder. In the lab what I have done to make the viewing easier
because of the delay, is to use the BNC connector similar to the
connectors on a Kistler forceplate amplifier and connect an extra
monitor to the video output jack. Your 7350 VCR has RCA outputs,
S video and the BNC jacks in the back of the unit.
You could select any of them for the monitor but you probably want to
save the S video output to go to the Iomega break out box coming from
the capture board, because this output has the best analog resolution
from this great VCR. To utilize the complete resolution available
by this VCR you should have taped the movement using a SVHS recorder
and used SVHS tape. If you don't have a SVHS recorder but have a
Hi8 camcorder than you still need to use SVHS tape when you down
load the format , in order to take adavance of the resolution. Please
take these comments as just general information because I don't have
any idea about your knowledge about videography and sometimes simple
informational items are not communicated or are skipped in a
discussion, as I experience with my students daily. By connecting
this extra monitor or TV in parallel, you are now able to see real
time the video that is being streamed into the buz capture card.
You'll still need to probably trim the video startup and end segments
a little but you'll be very close to the exact segment that you
desire to digitize. This way you can use the shuttle on the 7350 to
easily locate your video segment and then capture it. Remember that
after you find the segment, when you are ready to capture the segment
that the VCR takes a little time to take the slack out of the tape in
the playing heads and then reach the proper tape transport speed for
an accurate time base.
I hope you find my comments/suggestions helpful and please feel free
to call me at 812-237-3927 (office) or home 812-299-9485 (home) or
email.
The new APAS system works great.

Hi John & Gideon,
We made the grabber work to day. We changed the image size from 352 x 288
CIF to 720 x 576 FULL in the RealCap program. Then we discovered that the
compression ratio had to be adjusted, otherwise we would loose frames. The
JPEG quality is now set to about 42 kb/frame.
Then I also had to change the order to reverse, but it seems to be reliable
and consistent now.
Are you surprised that 352 x 288 gave identical odd and even field?
Another thing I can't figure out is when we have colors or not on the AVI-file.
Best wishes
Erik

Tips For Better Capture
Steps:
To ensure that you capture the highest quality video you may want to follow these steps.
If you system is not optimized, the result may be dropped video frames. Video with dropped
frames will look jittery and will have audio dropouts.
1) Run Disk Defragmenter. Creating, modifying and deleting files causes
fragmentation of your hard drive. You should defragment your hard disk every month to
maintain an optimal disk. Depending upon the size and speed of your hard drive, this
process could take up to an hour or more.
a) Close all applications.
b) Click Start.
c) Click Program.
d) Click Accessories.
e) Click System tools.
f) Click Disk Defragmenter.
g) Select the drive you would like to defragmet.
2) Don't run other applications while your are capturing video to your hard disk.
3) Change your "Typical Role" settings from desktop computer to Network
Server. This will increase the size of the file and directory cache. This results in
increased speed when accessing the hard disk.
a) Right click on "My Computer".
b) Click Properties.
c) Click Performance.
d) Click File System.
e) Click arrow next to "Typical Role of this machine" and select
"Network Server".
f) Click and drag the "Read ahead" optimization slider all the way
to full.
g) Click OK.
h) You must restart your machine for these changes to take effect.
4) Be sure that DMA is enabled for IDE hard disks. DMA access has lower CPU
overhead and transfers data faster.
Note: Not all hardware supports DMA access. If DMA is not supported by your hardware you
will need to restart your PC in safe mode to disable DMA.
a) Right click on "My Computer".
b) Click Properties.
c) Click Device Manager tab.
d) Double click Disk Drives.
e) Double click your hard disk. It will be labeled Generic IDE type XXX.
f) Click the Settings tab.
g) Enable DMA by clicking the mouse in the check off box.
h) Click OK.
i) Click OK.
5) Modify the minimum and maximum memory size for the Windows 98 32 bit disk cache.
Windows reserves all memory not in use for disk caching, loading additional applications
will cause the disk cache to shrink and enlarge. Manually setting the size of the disk
cache can improve efficiency.
Note: RAM allocated to the cache cannot be used by applications.
a) Click on Start\Run. Type in SYSEDIT. Click OK.
b) Click on the SYSTEM.INI window.
c) Search for [vcache] section
d) If you do not have this section add the following lines to system.ini.
e) [vcache]
f) MinFileCache=
g) MaxFileCache=
6) The more RAM you have the higher you should make these settings.
a) If your PC has 32 MB of RAM set min to 2048 (2MB) and the maximum to 4096 (4MB)
b) If your PC has 64MB RAM or more set min to 4096 (4MB) and the maximum to 16384
(16MB)
c) If your PC has 128MB RAM or more set min to 4096 (4MB) and maximum to 32768
(32MB)
7) Close the window and click YES to save your changes.
8) Restart the computer to activate the new settings.
